History of Onehunga Primary School

Onehunga, the suburb, lies on the southern slopes of Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) next to the Manukau Harbour. Originally Maori developed a thriving village based on horticultural and fishing in the area.

Onehunga Primary School was established in 1873 and since then it has changed and grown along with the community it serves. Originally one of the major ports for Auckland, Onehunga was in its heyday when the school was established with many wealthy and well known families settled in the area.

It developed as a separate township from Auckland and still retains its own identity and character.

Over time the port became less important and many of the grand old houses became tenanted. Now the area is going through a renaissance and many of these same houses are being restored to their former glory. The school also has been rebuilt over the years, but the grand old buildings that originally housed the school are still there - currently they are used as a community centre.

With a diverse cultural mix, Onehunga Primary is very much a reflection of the town. The school values the members of this community and utilises many as role models and contributors in terms of cultural education and in support roles.
